The sea is something entirely other; one cannot live hastily in it nor survive it with fear. The Sea Men—sailing rough waters many times over without knowing whether they will ever make it out unhurt or find in the depths their final resting place—are well aware of this.

Life at sea is hostile, hard and dangerous, and yet these brave men feel like fish out of water when they have to stay on dry land. Life on the sea penetrates their skin, and they would seem not to know how to live when not working. It is sad to see them staring at the sea, with dry feet, looking disoriented.

What manner of courage and madness makes a man enter a rough sea and sail in nut-sized ships that get tossed around and lost in the vast oceans?

“A Man at Sea” is a fiction—albeit one cut from the daily lives of these men—and the descriptions, filled with beauty and harmony, allow the reader to discover poetry where only grief and sorrow were found before, even if one had studied such lives in detail.

Alves dos Santos nasceu a 4 de Fevereiro de 1978, na cidade sul-africana de Johannesburg, mas fez-se gente em Machico, terra onde os descobridores portugueses da bela Ilha da Madeira primeiro firmaram pé.

Aí fez os primeiros anos de escola, sempre rodeado de livros – uma paixão que despertou bem cedo, em forma de leitura compulsiva. Mas deixou-se igualmente encantar pelas ciências exactas, tendo prosseguido os seus estudos nessa área na cidade do Funchal e posteriormente ingressado no curso de Engenharia Eletrotécnica no Instituto Superior Técnico, em Lisboa.

Foi sobretudo o choque com a saída precoce da sua Ilha e o confronto com a realidade, não raras vezes solitária, de uma metrópole como Lisboa que o fizeram passar da leitura para a escrita.

Alves dos Santos tem sido definido como um viajante da alma, um explorador dos enredos humanos e dos terrenos desconhecidos. Nas suas palavras encontramos a beleza de um âmago em efervescência, uma mescla de ar puro com aromas vulcânicos, mas sobretudo o retrato de um homem que vive em conluio com a descoberta, com a verdade e, acima de tudo, com a vida.

Tem várias participações em Antologias Poéticas e publicou em 2014 o seu primeiro livro a solo, intitulado Poemas de Amor e Outros Labirintos.

Alves dos Santos was born in 1978 in Johannesburg (South Africa), and grew up in Machico (Madeira), the site where the Portuguese explorers first set foot upon discovering that beautiful island.

He is a writer who is capable, both in his poetry and his fiction, of erupting courageously into the human spirit and drawing out its hidden truths, its doubts and its fears.

Through his written words, we come across the beauty of a compelling soul, a combination of pure air with volcanic aromas that unexpectedly sucks the reader into the characters’ lives.
